Architectural Outdoor
Some projects or concepts don't fall easily into the categories of Furniture or Ornamentation. While Metropolis has created numerous designs intended for outdoor lives, the sampling below illustrates some of the more diverse and not as easily categorized projects we have taken on over time. Combining materials, ideas and challenges to spark creative solutions is one of our primary motivations.

Streetscape Seating
Metropolis Fabrication & Design Studio created a comprehensive plan for a municipal improvement RFP to develop a streetscape for seating and relaxation along a ‘front porch’ theme. Metropolis created a shape to emulate the existing geography and produced a design referencing rafters and columns with railings and other ordinary porch features in an extraordinary setting.
The primary construction material is stainless steel with the rafters specified to be Cor-ten weathering steel. The weathering steel develops and maintains an oxidation patina without the accelerated deterioration of ordinary steels. This characteristic gives the design a multi-dimensional element, with the rafter portion contrasting the columns and railing elements, much as a porch would be painted in complimentary colors. A full line of public-use furniture was designed for within the space, allowing comfortable seating and small tables but preventing sleeping and overnight occupation. The perspective renderings were drawn for Metropolis by talented artist, Jim Orr.

Concave Copper Roof
Due to the complex nature of the included curvatures, this standing-seam, concave copper roof was handmade on-site to fit a custom bay window in a new construction residence.

Gardener's Shed
This eight-foot, square footprint, gardener's shed was designed, built and finished to match the client's home. The entire structure was built off-site at our workshops before being disassembled, transported, reassembled and installed at the homeowner's location over the course of one day. The rather steep hillside installation necessitated the structure be mounted on pilings set in concrete.
